Using a cutting guide to cut plank butt joints straight
We have constructed a cutting guide by gluing a thick planking strake on to a cutting board. The cutting guide helps to make sure that planking strakes will have straight butt joints when they are cut with a hobby knife. However, cutting onto a board like this is not good for knife blades - it also very tiring for hands and fingers.

Later on, when planking the hull, we purchased an "amati" plank cutter, which proved to be a very efficient tool for cutting accurate butt joints in planks and it is also much easier on the hands than using a hobby knife.
