Staining the prefabricated keel pieces
Robine experimented on scrap timber using various combinations of proofing stains diluted with a compatible wood preserving solution until she achieved the colours she wanted for various areas of the model.

Full strength Jarrah stain seemed to be best for the keel assembly. Unfortunately the actual keel wood supplied in the kit had a strange characteristic whereby all the natural grooves in the timber resisted the staining leaving very noticeable light streaks. To eliminate this I suggested that she use a wood putty, suitable for staining to fill the grooves - this had the desired effect because the streaks were then darker than the stained surface , giving a more natural appearance to the stained timber.
